Honda
Touru, the main character of the story, has decided to live in a
tent, during the time her grandfather renovates their home, for not
disturbing him. Therefore she camps in a forest, which, how she gets
to know very soon, belongs to the Souma. So, one morning she meets
Yuki Souma, who is in her class and also gets to know Shigure. When
both of them get to know that she lives in a tent, they convince
Touru to live with them and to care for their household (which is
really necessary in the kitchen!). Like this, Touru moves in to the
Souma and shortly after this, another member appears- Kyou.

He
is horrified to run across a girl, but at the same time, he
challenges Yuki. Touru, who wants to prevent this, stumbles and
falls in the arms of Kyou, who dissolves into a cloud of dust and
now sits in front of her as a cat. The poor Touru is so shocked,
that she fells against Shigure and Yuki, who, thereupon transform
into a dog and a mouse. That’s too much for the poor girl. Shigure
explains her the curse which lasts on the Souma-family. Some of the
members are possessed by the animals of the Chinese Horoscope and
transform into animals, as soon as they get embraced by the opposite
sex or when they are ill and weak. A big secret of the family is
entrusted to Touru and she promises to keep it for herself. |

Even
Akito decides not to remove her memory. Consequently Touru gets to
know, piece by piece, other persons of the Souma, and because of her
understanding behaviour she makes friends with all of them. She
always discovers new sides at Yuki, Kyou and the others, and decides
to get to know them the best as possible.

Even
Kyou develops a deep trust in her, so is Yuki. Whether Touru has a
premonition of it, is hard to say. Time after time, one gets to know
more and more facts about the fate of the several Souma and the
curse, because it’s everything but simple to transform into
animals. Especially the younger Souma, who experience hatred by
their parents etc. Additionally there is Akito, who is feared by
everyone. Not to forget, the second self of Kyo, which is hated and
hidden by him and appears very late… |

As
funny as Furuba is, as sad it is. I’ve seldom laughed so much
because of a series. The humour is marvellous, there is never so
much of it, that you are fed up with it and the sad elements make
you feel sympathy. Sure, it is chaotic and amusing in the first
place, but the dramatic elements shine through all the time.
Not
only Touru matures during the time, the Souma as well, learn of her,
especially Kyou and Yuki, even if one doesn’t put it past Touru,
but her happy and amiable character has a formative influence on all
of the Souma (only Akito doesn’t recognize her strength !) |

Justly,
the series on the most favoured of the last year, you should not be
alienated by the title (Fruits Basket is explained in the series).
Furuba is really top, and I doubt that there will be another series
anytime soon, to remove Furuba from my top-list!
