WMT press coverage

The aim of this section is to index the fanzine and magazine articles about the WMT. You'll find the listing of ones I managed to get with the references of the magazines they come from.
You know articles I have overlooked? Drop me an e-mail! Your contribution will make this listing more comprehensive. Thanks!

The listing

France:

Papa longues jambes, Animeland N° 4

"Alex"; Princesse Sarah, la fleur de Nippon Animation, Soko N° 1, March 1998.
2 pages. Many personal comments on "Little Princess Sara". The author mainly tries to analyse the personality of the series main character.

Morticelli, Stephano; Flo et les Robinson suisses, Soko N° 4, May 1998.
2 pages. A synopsis of Swiss Family Robinson's story, an information on its Italian version and some comments on Nippon Animation's work to make the series realistic and authentic.

Superbie, Diane; Princesse Sarah, Animeland N° 49, March 1998.
2 pages. A study of different aspects of "Little Princess Sara": screenplay, charaters, cultural and historical research made by Nippon Animation. Synthetic but very short. Followed by an article about the films based on Frances Hodgson Burnett's "Little Princess".

Marigeaud, Sandrine; Romeo no aoi sora, Angel Dust N° 6, Winter 1998.
4 pages. A synopsis of the story, a presentation of the characters, and some personal comments on the technical aspect and the major themes of Romeo's Blue Sky. This article is greatly illustrated, with impressively good pictures for a black and white publication. The fanzine also contains the lyrics of the Japanese credit songs.

Littardi, Cédric; "Nila"; Tom Sawyer, Catalogue de Manga Distribution N° 4, April 2000.
10 pages. This big article was published in the catalogue of the mail sailing order shop Manga Distribution. It starts by a presentation of Nippon Animation and a list of the World Masterpiece Theater series (renamed "Théâtre des grands chefs d'oeuvres du monde" or "Grand Théâtre du monde"), continues with a biography of Mark Twain and a presentation of his works, and ends with a character guide and a synopsis of the episodes. It is followed by some staff information and the lyrics of the French credit songs. In spite of some mistakes (the French WMT titles are sometimes quite weird ^^), this article is overall rather well researched and constitutes AFAIK the first French publication to give a general info on the WMT.

Goëtzinger, Frédéric; Les quatre filles du docteur March, Petite bonne femme, La saga de la famille Alcott March, Super S N° 1, June 2000.
5 pages. Information on "Little Women" and "Little Men" and their origin (through the life of the author Louisa May Alcott). Some personal comments.

Germany:

Oleshko, Robert et Rehrl, Taro; Die World Masterpiece Theater I, FUNine N° 6, November 1998.
2 pages. A very clear and detailed presentation of the History the main characteristics of the WMT.

Oleshko, Robert et Rehrl, Taro; Die World Masterpiece Theater II, FUNine N° 7, January 1999.
2 pages. Second part of the study, mainly dealing with the graphical style, and the "end" of the WMT. The last part of the article gives some practical information on the WMT fandom.

Kleinschmidt Danny; Shoukoujo Sara, AnimaniA 35, May - June 2000.
3 pages. Presentation of the original novel, its author, the story and the characters. Some parts sadly make an amalgam between the book and its animated adaptation...

Italy:

HAYAO MIYAZAKI, Mangazine N°2, May 1991.
2 pages. This article is dedicated to Hayao MIYAZAKI and have some reference to Heidi, Marco and "Anne of Green Gables".

Papa gambalunga, Japan Magazine, Summer 1991.
6 pages. A detailed summary of "Daddy Long Legs" with the listing of the 32 first episodes (the article was apparently written during its first Italian release), and above all, many images!

I Classici - Anna dai capelli rossi, Japan Magazine N°4, August 1992.
4 pages. An article about "Anne of Green Gables" illustrated by around 50 images! The text sums up the story and is followed by some technical information crediting Hayao MIYAZAKI as the character designer (instead of Yoshifumi KONDO) and Florence Montgomery as the original writer (her name was in fact Lucy Maude Montgomery).

I Classici - Flo, la piccola Robinson, Japan Magazine N°6, October 1992.
4 pages. A summary of "Swiss Family Robinson", some technical information, and above all, many nice illustrations.

I Classici - Pollyanna!, Japan Magazine N°7, November 1992.
4 pages. A summary of the story, two episodes listings (First Italian, but the authors also had the great idea to translate into English the original titles!), and like all the other articles of the "I Classici" line, nice illustrations! ^_^

I Classici - Peline Story , Japan Magazine N°9, January 1993.
2 pages. A detailed Summary of "The Story of Perrine" and some technical information.

Cuore di manga, Mangazine N°36, July 1994.
2 pages. An article dedicated to Isao TAKAHATA which also contains a summary of "Heidi".

Baglini Claudia, Ah mio Takahata , Réaltà Virtuale 3rd year N°1, May - June 1995.
2 pages. A tribune defending the WMT, which are often scorned in Italy. The author mainly focuses on "The Story of the Trapp Family" and "Little Men".

Un lungo articolo dischiuso fra i petali di AnimaniA per Romeo, Rayearth e Slayers, Animania N°3, October - November 1997.
1 page. Summary and cuts of "Romeo's Blue Sky" in Italy.

Romeo no aoi sora - Il cielo azzurro di Romeo, Ukiyo N°5, January - February 1998.
4 pages. A very detailed summary of Romeo (with many spoilers), this article also deals with all the cuts that were made to this series when it was shown in Italy and lists all the WMT produced before 1995. A separate frame gives the original lyrics of the Japanese opening.
