Chapter Twelve: The Confusing Password

After 5 days of traveling they finally arrived to the mysterious crypt. A tall
gate loomed before them. Kento was about to push it when Anubis yelled, “Don’t
push it!” So they stood a couple of hours, until Rowan noticed a stone tile with
markings on it. He bent down to inspect it, and was rewarded by a curious
stanza:

<T***3+S***3>

Though he had an IQ of 250, he knew had his work cut out for him, especially
when it required a password to get in. That night, while the others slept, he
talked to Anubis. “Anubis, I was wondering, I noticed this tile called
<T***3+S***3>. What does it mean?” “I really don’t know, Rowan.”

“Look, go to bed, now.” His answer was met by the defiance of Rowan’s eyes;
Anubis could clearly see that Rowan was slowly, but surely falling for Kyra.
‘And my gut feeling tells me he’ll try to do whatever he can in his power to
save her.’ They kept staring at each other, until Rowan fell asleep.

Anubis let sleep take over him. After a while, Rowan glanced up, and sneaked
away from the camp. He went toward the gate and inspected the tile. He figured
out that “T” was for tap and “S” was for snap. He noticed something beneath the
dust. He brushed it away to reveal an equal sign and a 4.

<T****4+S***3=>

He smiled. He knew what the password was now. Anubis felt himself being shaken.
He looked up to see Rowan and was about to tell him off when he noticed the look
in his eyes. The look that he found something that might benefit them. “Spit it
out.” He said calmly.

“I know the password.” Whatever Anubis was expecting, it wasn’t that. So when
they sunk in, he looked at him with a surprised look on his face. “But how—.”
“No buts, Anubis. Let’s just wake up everyone else and I’ll tell you everything
on the way up.”

Within seconds they were on their way. When they arrived at the gate, Sage
asked, “Well, what’s the password?” “The Addams Family Rap.” Rowan replied. 8
pairs of eyes blinked at this.

When Rowan saw their faces he said; “Well, can you think of anything else?”
Kento was about to retort when Cye shook his head. “Come on, guys. It has to be.
I feel it in my freakin’ bones!” When they said nothing, he cursed out loud and
turned his back towards them, so they wouldn’t see him crying.

Anubis approached him. He put his hand on Rowan’s shoulder and whispered; “Let’s
give it a try now, shall we?” Rowan looked at him. “I can see it in your eyes
that you care for my sister. Now, let’s see if this works, eh?”

Rowan nodded in reply. They started to do the password (Rowan would have been
very happy to snap, since it was his favorite part, but couldn’t because of his
sub armor.)

Rowan tapped 4 times on the frame.
Anubis snapped his fingers twice.
Rowan repeated the tap.
Anubis repeated the snap.
Rowan tapped 12 times on the frame.
Anubis snapped 2.

For a moment, nothing happened. But the gates slowly opened to reveal a
monastery in the middle of paradise. A little monk came in their direction. “We
have been expecting you, Rowan of The Strata.”
