Mia's Magic, Chapter 2 Mia's Magic: Chapter 2

Written by diamondgirl
After breakfast, everyone gathered in the living room to hear Mia's tale. This wasn't the most important thing on Mia's mind, though. As the guys waited, Mia changed into a tank top and cutoffs, then dug around in the attic until she found her cauldron and other materials for spells. She then returned to the living room, where her friends were growing restless.

"What's all that stuff?" Kento asked when he saw Mia walk into the room, one box in her arms and four more floating behind her.

"Ingredients, spell books, and everything else one would need to be a top-rank spell caster," Mia replied, setting the boxes down behind the couch Cye and Kento occupied. A moment later, she reappeared with a small cauldron; several jars and candles; an old, leather-bound book; a large piece of silk; and a wooden spoon. "Rowen, spread this silk out on the coffee table for me, will ya? My hands are full." Rowen exchanged a look with Sage that said, "Telekinetically carries boxes down from the attic and she can't spread a cloth because her hands are full?", but he did as Mia asked and covered the coffee table.

"Okay, now take the cauldron and set it down right in the middle of the table," Mia instructed. Once again, Rowen obeyed without seeing the point. In the end, he realized he had practically set up the entire spell by following Mia's directions. He set the candles in a circle in the exact order she said, and got a book of matches so Mia could light them. Mia thanked Rowen, and allowed him to return to the recliner he'd occupied earlier.

"I need absolute silence for this spell, you guys," Mia said when Rowen was sitting once more. "Got it?" Everyone nodded, even White Blaze. Mia sighed, then pulled a match out of the book and struck it. She lit the candle closest to her, a brown one.

"~Earth,~" Mia said, her voice a monotone. "~Fire,~" she lit the red-orange candle, 40 degrees to the left. "~Air,~" a sky-blue one another 40 degrees to the left. "~Water,~" an aquamarine candle; "~Light,~" white; "~Shadow,~" black; "~Order,~" half black, half white; "~Love,~" blood-red; "~Chaos,~" the final candle, an even gray. Then Mia opened the nine jars she'd gathered.

"~Feather of a phoenix,~" Mia continued in the same tone of voice she'd used to recite the nine elements of magic. She drew a golden feather from one jar and dropped it into the cauldron. "~Talon of a hippogriff.~" A large, sharp claw was dropped into the cauldron, and a faint light began to glow within. "~Essence of wolfsbane,~" some liquid was added, and the light grew brighter. "~Fingernails of a naiad; hair from the mane of a unicorn; blood of a basilisk; legs of a white cricket; vampire's fang.~"

Mia finished putting the ingredients of the spell in the cauldron, and the light from within had increased to a brightness equal to the flame on any of the candles. She then took the wooden spoon in her hand and began to stir the mixture.

"-Sacred powers beyond time and space, I ask a boon of your infinite grace: Within this house protection I seek, Within these walls may Jared's magic be weak. Sacred powers beyond time and space, A wish and an offering to your infinite grace!-"

When Mia finished speaking, the cauldron's light flared as bright as the sun before vanishing. As Mia's vision returned, she blew out the candles and looked into the cauldron. Finding it empty, she grinned.

"They actually decided to help me! This is fantastic! Okay, now that I don't have to worry about Jared attacking, I can explain everything to you." Mia stood up and moved to a spot where she could see everyone, then sat and began her story.

"A long time ago, even before the first battle with Talpa, Europe was a continent ruled by legendary civilizations. However, these civilizations collapsed, and magic and religion became two major parts of life. With the old sciences lost, superstition once again took over, and many people spread throughout Europe began to practice magic once more.

"Approximately one thousand years ago, a girl was born with the natural ability to use magic. Her mother died giving birth and her father refused to raise her, so the midwife who attended her birth adopted the girl and called her Morgan. Morgan learned to use her gift with incredible skill, and joined the men in defending the village from invading forces.

"When Morgan was 16, a huge army laid siege to the village. Morgan knew they had no hope of defeating this army, so one night she snuck out to make a deal with the leader. If he left her village unharmed, she would surrender. He agreed, allowing Morgan to gather a few belongings. They journeyed for a month, and finally reached the army's homeland. There, Morgan met the leader's-his name was Japheth, like Noah's son-family: His wife and son, the latter of which was a few years older than Morgan.

"Morgan learned that Japheth had been the only survivor of a raid on his own village when he was but a small boy, and the people of this city made him one of their own. They would do the same for Morgan, making her a part of them while allowing her to keep her name. Morgan became good friends with Japheth's son, Jared, but wanted nothing more from the relationship. Jared, on the other hand, was quite taken by Morgan, so one night, when everyone was asleep, he cast a spell. Everyone knew that Jared practiced magic, but no one knew that he was powerful enough to cast a spell that could alter a person's feelings for another. He cast just such a spell that night, and Morgan soon found herself feeling strange things about Jared. It felt as though she were falling in love with him.

"By the time Morgan was 18, she felt ready to marry Jared. However, this wasn't meant to be. People were becoming wary of all magic users, and wanted to get rid of Morgan and Jared. It was Jared's fault, this whole ordeal. He had been playing too many magical pranks and they had grown far too serious. It wasn't uncommon to find livestock dead as a result of one of his spells.

"One evening, Morgan overheard some neighbors talking. They were planning to kill Morgan and Jared. Terrified, Morgan told Jared what she'd heard. He proposed that they make a wizard pact before they were captured, so that even if they were both killed, they could still be together when they were reborn. Morgan, in her enchanted state, felt that this was best, and agreed. When everyone was asleep that night, Morgan and Jared snuck out to a clearing in the nearby forest where they often went to be alone. They then made a wizard pact, swearing by the Nine Magical Forces that, when next they were reborn close enough in age, they would find each other, no matter what.

"After the pact was made, Morgan and Jared returned to the village. Almost immediately they were captured. They were imprisoned, and the next morning separately questioned. Morgan was interrogated first, and she told the entire truth. Next Jared was questioned, and he lied about everything. He claimed that Morgan had enchanted him, forcing him to do everything that was in truth his fault. Jared hadn't started his pranks until after Morgan's arrival, and Morgan _was_ a foreigner, so Jared was released and Morgan sentenced to burn. She tried to convince everyone of her innocence, but to no avail. The day she was scheduled to burn, Jared came to Morgan's tiny prison cell and told her that he would save her from the flames if possible. Morgan foolishly believed him, and even as she died the young woman thought Jared would save her."

Mia stopped talking for a bit to rest her mouth, and the guys all took this time to react to what she had told them so far. "He honestly believed you were still under his spell last night?" Yuli wondered. "That guy must be nuts."

"What a rat," Kento added. "Blaming everything on the woman he supposedly loves. He's the one that shoulda burned."

"You're right, Kento, Jared should have burned that day," Mia agreed. "But he didn't. He went crazy after Morgan's death, haunted by her spirit. He confessed to his crimes, which only grew worse after Morgan's death, and was executed. Morgan's spirit was allowed to rest, but she was still bound by the wizard's pact. Morgan consulted those in charge of rebirth assignments, and was able to arrange most of her rebirths so that she and Jared were never close enough in age to have a proper relationship. But finally, she could avoid it no longer. Morgan was reborn once more, this time only five years after Jared.

"This time, Morgan was born Mia Koji. The powers that be had plans for me, I was meant to guide the Ronin Warriors in the Dynasty Wars. However, because of the time I was born relative to Jared, I would also eventually have to confront him. When I was thirteen, I began to remember my life as Morgan. I relearned the basics of magic, and by the time I met you guys I was a pretty decent spell caster. I only needed to relearn battle magic, but I knew I could not use any of my magic to help you against the Dynasty. I never intended to, but I accidentally used it to properly weild the Ancient's Staff. Fortunately Talpa didn't detect my magic, or I would have been a target and either died or gone against what was meant to be.

"I didn't start relearning battle magic until after you defeated Talpa the second time. I could feel that Jared was closer to finding me, and I wanted to confront him, end this once and for all. That is what's giong on now. I will sever my connection to Jared, and finally be able to lead my own life. And that is all you need to know about my history."

Having finished her story, Mia stood and went upstairs, leaving the guys to their thoughts.
