Fan's Insight on Voltes V

My Voltes V Experience
Camilla Imperial

I was really glad to see a great website dedicated to what is still in my opinion, the best anime series of all time. A huge chunk of my childhood in the Philippines was spent watching Voltes V, role playing episodes (I get to be Jamie of course!), talking about it, and daydreaming that I was Jamie, fighting to help save the world. To me it was the greatest show, the only one that mattered. I remember counting down the minutes till school let out so that I could watch it while our maid fixed me a snack.

I was just amazed by the characters' bravery, the storyline, the robot itself, and even by the Boazanians...evil they may be, you gotta admire their determination...and I knew it was wrong, but I was one of the few who didn't have a crush on Steve. I thought Prince Zardos was the hot one instead...and I always hoped that one day he would turn around and become good, and get together with my idol Jamie instead.

It was funny because even though the dialogue was dubbed in English, the opening and credit songs were kept in Japanese...and also the "volt in" sequence was in Japanese...although I do recall some instances they played the English song for that..but for the most part it was in Japanese that's why even though we didn't know what the song meant, we were able to sing along to it (the words may not be completely right but we got the majority of it lol)...even to this day I could, since I downloaded your video clips. Pretty impressive for people who don't speak Japanese!

Even though I was a big fan, I never had the desire to own the toys, I had the usual Barbies instead. But nevertheless I welcomed the opportunity to tinker with the Voltes V toys my male friends had. I also preferred the actual role playing and I wore my long hair with a big bow just like Jamie's, even in school. Suddenly I remembered that all of a sudden my favorite tv show didn't come on. My dad explained it was coz it was violent, but really because Marcos outlawed it. I was crushed. I never found out how the story ended. I even forgot which was the last episode I saw... I got older, and like my other memories, Voltes V retreated to the back of my mind, retired but not completely forgotten.

I moved to the United States in 1996. I am 22 years old now, and I was talking to one of my guy friends about favorite childhood tv shows. This prompted me google search Voltes V for old times' sake and I saw your site. Like others before me, I wept at the sight of my childhood right before me. It brought so many good, happy memories. Not just of the show itself, but what it presented...childhood innocence, that good will always triumph over evil, one shouldn't give up hope and most importantly, the thoughts of watching it and playing w/ my old friends. I read the episode guide and finally I now know how the story ended, so that brought closure to that long buried question.

Your site renewed my love for this show, and I am in the process of bidding on some overpriced Voltes V dvds on ebay...but it's worth it. I also saved your pics on my hard drive. Thanks so much for taking the time to make this site, making the legacy of Voltes V available to me and to every fan out there in the world. I'm sure my fellow Filipino fans (and non-Filipino ones) gladly appreciate it.
